Origin of Mother's Day

Mother's Day celebration began in the year 1908 when Anna Jarvis organized a memorial for her mother; Anna Jarvis is a "Peace Activist" who used to care the wounded soldiers of the American Civil War. This was held at the St Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia, which was as of now holds the International Mother's Day Shrine.

Anna Jarvis initiated to gather all support for the celebration of Mother's Day in the United States in 1905 after her mother died in the same year. She wanted to honor all the Mothers in the world who have done lots and lots of sacrifices for their family and society.

Due to her continuous struggles & efforts, in 1911 Most of the states in the US started celebrating Mother's Day and considered it as a local holiday. The home state of Jarvis, West Virginia has become the first state to announce holiday for the Mother’s day in the year 1910.

Finally, in 1914, Woodrow Wilson the 28th President of United States of America has signed the proclamation for Mother’s day celebration in the same year and it was officially declared the second Sunday of May as a Mother's Day and as a National holiday for every year.

In this way, the present Mother's Day celebration is originated from the USA and many other countries like India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Italy, Singapore, Belgium, etc... and also selected the same date for Mother’s day celebration.
